Artificial intelligence is becoming a huge part of nearly every industry, and the wedding world is no exception. While technology can be helpful, it’s important to remember that the wedding industry is built on something AI simply can’t replicate: real human creativity and connection. Behind every hand-lettered invitation, beautiful tablescape, and special photograph is a professional who has spent years honing their craft. They don’t see anything wrong with plugging in our proprietary work to ChatGPT, or another artist’s work, into AI – which is a huge problem. I get that it’s a quick easy fix when you don’t have the vocabulary to necessarily express what you want to our design team; but this is copyrighted work that is not meant for open AI, and not meant for AI to freely pull from down the road. When you put, for example, an artist’s watercolor painting of a venue into AI, and ask AI to add trees to the painting – you are releasing that artist’s artwork into open AI for AI to pull from when the next bride doesn’t want to commission an artist to paint that specific venue.
We value the creative process; the back and forth; the energy put in to create something truly unique. Using AI skips the process all together and produces something that is only meant for a digital screen – not print production or fabrication. When clients use AI, and have no idea the intricacies of something like preparing a letterpress file for printing on handmade paper – their hopes and dreams get crushed when we have to share that the AI file that was generated is something that is physically not possible to produce.
We are in the process of updating all of our design boards, our contracts, and educating clients and industry peers about the implications of AI and how it is harmful to the creative process and the creative industry as a whole. Giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, people don’t know what they don’t know. If it’s our job to educate them, let’s do it.”
